Yes, you read that headline properly. 40 runs. One game. On Saturday night, the Chukars smashed a 31-year-old record of 33 runs scored in a single game, set by the Ogden Raptors in a 33-10 win over the Helena Brewers on August 27th, 1995.
The Chukars would go on to beat Great Falls 40-18 at Melaleuca Field. The 68 combined runs is also a Pioneer League record for a single game.
Idaho Falls sprinted out of the gates with 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and would score four in the second, nine in the third, five in the fourth, another nine-spot in the sixth and two in the eighth, on 32 hits and seven home runs, leaving just five men on base.
Without further ado, let’s break down the individual performances from the Chukars.
Each Idaho Falls batter had a multi-hit day, for the first time this season. LF Casey Vaughan, CF Tyler Wyatt and 3B Justin Trimble each had five hits, and Vaughan and Wyatt drove in seven runs each. Trimble would drive in eight runs in eight at-bats. Vaughan would also come around to score eight runs in his eight plate appearances.
RF Sam Canton drove in six runs and now leads the Pioneer League in the RBI category. Idaho Falls batted around in the first, third and sixth innings.
1B Parker Lester would have the record-breaking hit in the sixth inning, hitting a three-run home run, his second of the game and 10th of the season.
3B Justin Trimble would have his team-leading fourth multi-homer game and is now second in the league with 21 round-trippers.
The Chukars look for a series sweep of Great Falls on Sunday, with a 2 PM start.
