Bio
Before he became the manager of the New York Yankees, Billy Martin began his baseball career with the Idaho Falls Russets, the Yankees Level-C Affiliate. An 18-year old Martin hit .254 with seven doubles and 12 RBI in 32 games played with the Russets in 1946. Martin went on to play 11 years in the major leagues with the Yankees, Tigers, Athletics,Twins, Braves, and with Cleveland. His playing career his best remembered for an amazing catch of a Jackie Robinson pop up that was blown by the wind during Game Seven of the 1952 World Series, a moment that saved the series for the Yankees.
After his big league career wrapped up, Billy went on to manage the Twins, Tigers, Athletics, the Texas Rangers and the Yankees, which he managed five different times. He led the Yankees to the World Series title in 1977, and last managed the Bronx Bombers in 1988. His number was retired by the Yankess on August 10, 1986 and is on display at Monument Park inside Yankee Stadium. Billy passed away on Christmas Day of 1989, aged 61.
